On Tuesday, September 26, 2023, the VESS will be holding its 4th annual Virtual Residency Fair! This event was established three years ago to facilitate communication between medical students and program directors, faculty, and residents from around the country during the pandemic. Feedback from medical students was overwhelmingly positive. Last year we had 40 programs and 138 applicants take part. This year we will have a panel of current trainees kick off the session followed by time for the applicants to visit individual Zoom rooms of the various programs.

Description: The Geisinger Vascular Surgery Fellowship and Residency programs are ACGME-accredited programs that provide advanced training in open surgical and endovascular treatment of vascular disease. Expertise in non-invasive vascular diagnostics is obtained through rotations in the Geisinger Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory. The training programs are primarily based at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania with additional rotations at Geisinger Wyoming Valley, in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania and Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, Pennsylvania. A diverse faculty of fourteen board-certified vascular surgeons staff these academic vascular surgery services at three tertiary care facilities. Additionally, we are supported by four state-of-the art hybrid operating rooms dedicated to vascular surgery and a fleet of helicopters that bring a wide-range of complex vascular emergencies and trauma cases to our medical centers.

Description: Each year, two individuals are trained in the specialty of vascular surgery during a 5 year vascular surgery integrated training residency. Operative and management experience is obtained primarily through the vascular and general surgery services at the University Medical Center – NO, West Jefferson Medical Center and Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, as well as ample opportunities to work with attendings at other affiliated and private hospitals in the New Orleans and Baton Rouge areas. The exposure to a wide variety and volume in vascular reconstruction (aortic, peripheral, renomesenteric, carotid-vertebral, venous valve reconstruction, and venous bypass) has distinguished the LSU Vascular Surgery program from other training programs. Proficiency in diagnostic and therapeutic radiology procedures and noninvasive laboratory methods are an important component of the LSU program.

Description: The Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy at Loyola Medicine provides opportunities for training in Vascular Surgery that include a five year integrated vascular surgery residency (0+5) as well as a traditional two-year fellowship (5+2).Both programs are ACGME accredited and provide exposure to the entire spectrum of arterial and venous disease, and includes non-operative care, as well as open surgical and endovascular management. While Loyola Medicine’s Vascular Surgery Residency program was recently created, the Fellowship program was created in 1978 with the primary objective of providing comprehensive training for the management of arterial, venous and lymphatic diseases. In addition to the clinical training we offer at Loyola University Medical Center and the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital, we added other training sites at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital and MacNeal Hospital.

Through The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, residents are exposed to routine patient care as well as complicated medical problems, in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Interaction with a multitude of specialties occurs regularly along with grand rounds and didactic conferences. Description: Our two-year fellowship is a well established program that provides exceptional training for accomplished surgeons in the specialized field of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, and we are thrilled to welcome candidates for our new integrated residency program. Our program offers experience in complex endovascular aortic procedures and lower extremity interventions as well as complex open operations including aortic surgeries, mesenteric bypasses, and leg bypasses. Our trainees also participate in a wide variety of combined surgeries with various other sub-specialists to provide anterior spine exposures, porto-mesenteric or caval reconstructions, and arterial reconstruction for oncologic resections. Research is encouraged, and there is ample opportunity to present at regional and national meetings and produce peer-reviewed publications during training regardless of the training (0+5 or 5+2) track.

Description: UAB offers advanced vascular care to our patients with the availability of three hybrid endovascular suites (two at UAB and one at the Birmingham VA). We participate in ground breaking device trials, spanning the breadth of vascular surgery, including devices for the treatment of aortic and carotid disease, critical limb ischemia and venous disease. UAB is one of a select few centers in the country currently able to offer custom branched and fenestrated procedures to patients with conditions involving the arch and thoracoabdominal aorta. We also continue to graduate trainees with case volumes in open carotid, aortic and peripheral vascular surgery that are above national averages.

Description: The integrated residency in vascular surgery is a five-year (0+5) training program leading to eligibility for certification by the Vascular Surgery Board of the American Board of Surgery. The program accepts two residents per year, one civilian and one military. Civilian applicants participate in the National Residency Match Program (NRMP), applying in their final year of medical school. Military applicants are accepted from either the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) or the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) via the Joint Services Graduate Medical Education Selection Board (JSGMESB).

Description: Our program is a University Hospital, Veterans Administration, and Community Hospital based, 5-year ACGME/RRC accredited residency and encompasses all aspects of vascular and endovascular surgery techniques and patient care. Vascular residents participate in the diagnosis, preoperative care, operative procedure, and postoperative care for the majority of patients treated on the vascular service. Senior vascular surgery trainees also have important teaching responsibilities to our junior vascular surgery residents, general surgery residents, and medical students rotating on the vascular service. Vascular trainees assist general surgery residents in integrating noninvasive vascular studies into the overall evaluation of patients with vascular disease. Description: The USC Vascular Surgery program offers a 5 year integrated tract which is conducted at the University of Southern California Health Sciences Campus and Los Angeles County + USC Medical, and Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena. The integrated tract is offered to those who have an MD degree but have not received formal surgical training. The USC Vascular Surgery Independent Program is focused on developing the vascular surgeons of the future by providing a thorough and in depth open, endovascular, vascular medicine and vascular imaging experience. The independent program (5+2) provides those who have completed a general surgery residency an opportunity of additional focused training in vascular surgery.

Description: The division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery provides diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease ranging from the routine to highly complex cases while offering a full complement of services for patients with vascular disease. Description: Our programs provide broad-based training in all aspects of modern vascular surgery at four hospitals in Durham and Raleigh. Our fellowship is based at the University Hospital and the VA where the fellow is service chief. Integrated residents complete general surgery requirements in the first two years and the finale three years are spent as the service chief on the vascular services at the VA, the University, or Duke Raleigh Hospital. Description: At Montefiore, we have a long tradition of being on the forefront of Vascular Surgery. The first endovascular aortic aneurysm repair in the United States was performed here in 1992 and our center has participated in some of the landmark aortic aneurysm trials. Additionally, there is a long history of limb salvage with pioneering work in tibial bypass. Our fellowship is one of the oldest fellowships in the country, training many who are leaders in the field today, and we are now fortunate to have an integrated training program since 2012.

Description: The Division of Vascular Surgery at UT Southwestern has a 5-year integrated Vascular Surgery Residency, in addition to a 2-year Vascular Surgery Fellowship. Residents in the Integrated Residency participate in rotations in General Surgery, Radiology, Vascular Medicine/Cardiology, and Podiatry, among others, as PGY 1-3. The PGY 4 and 5 years are dedicated to Vascular Surgery. Throughout training, residents rotate at Clements University Hospital, Parkland Memorial Hospital, the Dallas VA Medical Center, and Children’s Hospital. Trainees are exposed to the entire breadth of operative techniques, ranging from basic vascular surgery to complex open vascular and endovascular procedures. Residents are also expected to attend formal educational conferences covering principals of vascular surgery, interpretation of non-invasive vascular lab studies, approach to clinical research, and simulation sessions. Graduates of our Vascular Surgery Fellowship program have gone on to pursue successful careers in both private practice and academic medicine.
